If it's over, it was nice while it lasted.
The brief period of civility in politics in the wake of the shootings in Tucson, Arizona, two weeks ago was tested this week. Some in the nation's capital forgot the call for a government that's worthy of 9-year-old shooting victim Christina Green.
Washington returned to its toxic ways at times this week as House Republicans sought to repeal the new health care law. Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee compared GOP charges of a "government takeover of health care" to lies spread by Nazis before the Holocaust. "A big lie just like (Nazi propagandist Joseph) Goebbels," Cohen said on the House floor.
Cohen tried to spin away his comments with half-apologies. "I didn't compare the Republicans to Nazis," Cohen told CNN. His explanations circled back to talking points. "While I regret that anything I said has created an opportunity to distract from the debate about health care for 32 million Americans ... I never called Republicans Nazis," he said in a statement released by his office. Later on MSNBC, Cohen conceded, "I do think the rhetoric needs to be toned down."
In today's politics, civility has little currency. Controversy equals exposure.

Police: Nevada councilwoman died in murder-suicide

An embattled Nevada councilwoman e-mailed a friend about items intended for her mother and called police shortly before they found her and her husband dead in an apparent murder-suicide, police in Mesquite said Wednesday.
"Detectives were advised that Bill Fairchild was the victim of a homicide-suicide. The crime scene and autopsy were consistent that Bill was deceased approximately an hour before Donna," said Chief Douglas L. Law in a statement after the autopsy. Each of the Fairchilds suffered a single gunshot wound.
The bodies were found Tuesday morning, hours before Donna Fairchild was to attend a City Council meeting and face possible sanctions over a travel expense voucher and public comments.
A neighbor told CNN on Wednesday she had lunch with Donna Fairchild on Monday and was the recipient of a box left by the councilwoman, apparently on the morning of the shootings.
According to police, Donna Fairchild contacted City Attorney Cheryl Truman Hunt around 8:30 p.m. Monday to discuss an opportunity to meet with the mayor and council in order to tender her resignation before the meeting. The city attorney at 10 p.m. confirmed with Fairchild a Tuesday afternoon meeting with the mayor and council.

Egypt, Jordan, and the Arab world's 'watershed' moment

The protests that have spread through parts of the Arab world led to dramatic change in another country Tuesday, as Jordan's king dismissed his government.
King Abdullah II made the decision following protests in recent weeks in which several thousand people demanded economic and political reforms.
Experts on the region said Tuesday Abdullah's decision was aimed at warding off larger-scale demonstrations in the wake of the huge protests in Tunisia and Egypt. The Tunisia protests, which began the movement, toppled that country's government. In Egypt, President Hosni Mubarak has fired his Cabinet, but protesters in massive demonstrations continue to call for his ouster.
The protests -- which have also caught on to various extents in Algeria, Yemen, and Sudan -- have proved to be "a real watershed event for the Arab world," said Blake Hounshell, managing editor of Foreign Policy magazine. "It's really unprecedented."
There was a series of protests in Arab nations in the 1950s, but those were prompted by an ideology of Pan-Arabism in a post-colonial world, said Emile Hokayem, with the International Institute for Strategic Studies. A 2005 uprising in Lebanon was about independence and ousting Syria. While it was successful, the revolution's message was not one that other nations associated with, he said.
"It's different this time. People are standing up for their economic rights, their dignity. It's very different," said Hokayem.

Should The Daily worry about possible Apple bait-and-switch?

This morning in New York City, Rupert Murdoch held a press event announcing the launch of The Daily, the world's first iPad-only "newspaper."
While I listened to the streaming audio, I was scanning the news -- and I spotted a headline that should probably make News Corp. nervous about its new venture: Apple blocks Sony e-book app. Is Kindle next?
First, a bit about The Daily, per today's announcement:
According to News Corp, iPad owners can subscribe to The Daily with one click, at a weekly rate of 99 cents. An annual subscription costs $39.99. The publication also will display paid advertising.
Furthermore, Murdoch confirmed that the iPad will probably be the only provider for The Daily for this year and next year. Eventually News Corp. will be developing editions for all tablet platforms, but for right now, it's effectively an iPad exclusive -- which means News Corp. is relying heavily on the terms of the deal it's worked out with Apple to make the economics of this venture pay off.

How to read The Daily without an iPad, for free

The Daily, the iPad-only tablet "newspaper" thet launched Wednesday, has an odd relationship with the web: It allows both subscribers and non-subscribers to view web-based versions of all of its articles for free, but it doesn't offer a convenient index (a.k.a. homepage) for perusing them.
So Andy Baio, a self-described journalist/programmer who works at Expert Labs, decided to do The Daily a favor: Compile all of the stories published each day by and post them to Tumblr.
Now, everyone can read The Daily, and even subscribers can access back issues -- which they weren't able to do previously.
The problem, of course, is that The Daily doesn't want users accessing its content for free; it wants people to pay for the iPad edition, which costs 99 cents per week.

"Frankly, I'm... very curious about the legal implications," he wrote, pointing out that his e-mail is listed at the top of the page should any of News Corp's lawyers care to get in touch.

Madonnas Adoption including Africa Today

To top this off, Madonna has been to Africa to adopt a child called David, throwing Malawi into the worlds media. A group of Malawian charities sought a court injunction to try and block the pop star Madonnas bid to adopt a baby boy. A group of Malawian charities said that pop star Madonnas bid to adopt a boy was illegal and sought a court injunction halting the adoption.

The charity obviously didnt have the power (money, fame?) that Madonna has and the adopted baby arrived in UK recently to start his new and privileged life. They have secured a temporary 18-month custody order from the Malawi courts and hope to adopt him formally. How is adopting individual children from overseas going to help with the bigger problem of rampant child poverty in Malawi? Does it matter? Is this not a case of child trafficking?

Westminster Council, which covers the area where Madonna lives in the UK has stated that they regularly received applications from residents wishing to adopt from overseas. I dont understand - Why is this the case when there are hundreds of child in the UK that need adopting and a home just as much as baby David. Would baby David not be better off in his own extended family and community? Louise Richards, from War on Want, added: "Madonna's step to adopt the baby is a well-meaning, but misguided act." In the capital Lilongwe, it was claimed that the courts had improperly waived Malawian laws to allow Madonna and Ritchie custody because of their celebrity status. Two months ago the pop superstar announced she was to donate three million dollars (£1.6m) to the country through the Raising Malawi charity. May that have had something to do with it I ask?

To Use or Not to Use: Spot Colors or Process Colors or Both???

Most color print projects use either sport colors or porcess colors. It’s quite general knowledge that a couple of spot colors cost less thatn four-color or process color printing. Still, when you are inclined to use full-color photos, the only option you can have is that of process colors…Meanwhile, some full color printing projects need to use both process color s and spot colors to finish the print job successfully.
Do you know how to identify when to use spot colors or process colors? Or when to use both? It would save you from a lot of rejects and wasted budget when you know which is more suitable to use.
It is ideal to use spot colors, like Pantone Matching System (PMS) colors when:
-your printing job has no full-color photographs involved and requires only one or two colors. This includes one spot color and black.
-your publication needs a color or colors that can’t be accurately reproduced using CMYK inks. This may be the color matching for your corporate or logo color.
-there is a requirement of one specific color to be printed over multiple pages consistently.

Commercial Color Printing: An Illusion?

Understanding the world of commercial full color printing may take us a few years to grasp completely. But in a nutshell, here’s an introduction of the necessary concepts with regards to it.
1.Halftones – this the simple process of adding some color even if it’s only gray. In this, an image setter is quite handy, although presents its problems because of being a binary digital device. It can only produce black pixels or leave white spaces. Still, there is its resolution in handy and the human eye’s limitation to make some tricks work. Each pixel of an imageset is smaller than the eye can resolve. Once a dot has been built up, it will be perceived as a 50% gray.
This kind of optical illusion is to break the image into a very fine grid with each square of the grid given an appropriate gray level. The imagesetter is used to simulate this gray level by creating its own grid and fills in the appropriate number of pixels. The notional grids that break the image into cells are called screens. A halftone is then created by the resulting image that gives the impression of continuous grayscales.
2.Spot Color – it is adding some simple true color. The process is based on the simple principle of putting the page through the press more than once with a different ink each time. The colors must be kept absolutely separate so that the item being colored, e.g. the masthead, will only be printed with the colored ink while the text will only be printed black. Tippexing out all the elements to be printed in blank ink on one sheet and reversing the process on the other can be the theoretical way to produce the needed color-separated plates. Due to innovative technologies allowed for spot colors to be automatically separated.
Spot color presents 2 difficulties, though. Color accuracy due to the separated imageset output but resolved by the Pantone library. It is a printed palette with some 1,000 that are based on a precise combination of inks. Next difficulty may be developed once you get adventurous and start adding overlapping colors. The main solution for this is to set output to include registration marks.
3.Process Color – is really the answer to how all the continuous photographs and solid colors in the magazines and brochures that surround us were created. It is the combination of the halftone and spot color effects. Apparent colors are produced through blending, rather than creating each color by blending inks, it is again done by taking advantage of the human eye’s limitation. Colored dots too small for the eye to distinguish are placed next to each other which makes them seem like a combined color. This combination of 3 inks, cyan, magenta and yellow produces the full range of color in printed materials we always see. 100% combination of this 3 inks makes black.
The dots were slightly offset and not placed directly on top of each other. To achieve this, the inks’ halftone screens were set at an angle to each other. Actually, the trick is that by blending 256 levels of each of the three coloured inks as halftone dots, the theoretical maximum of 16.8 million colours (256 x 256 x 256) is achieved. It has become a simple solution that has worked well beautifully and elegantly.
However, it also proves that a full color print is actually an optical illusion – of blending and built on halftoning. You might think it a case of magic trick of the eye, but even as it is explained quite simply, it is still puzzling enough that you might even get the wrong solution if you tried.
Of course many other factors contribute to the whole colored output – the quality of the paper to be used is considered a great deal in all three concepts of color printing. Another factor to be considered in full color printing is the assistive technology you are using and how innovative it could be. The US Senate has reached a deal that could see the approval of a stalled bill that would grant millions of illegal immigrants the right to stay. One of the Senate bill's key provisions is the opening of a path to eventual citizenship for about 11 million illegal immigrants.
The House bill would criminalise illegal immigrants and create a vast fence on the southern US border. It has sparked huge street protests from immigrant groups and put the issue high on the agenda for November's mid-term elections. The Latinos are the fastest growing minority and George Bush is keen to win their votes.
A similar debate is also raging in the UK regarding the influx of mainly Polish workers into the UK, along with Slovaks due to the enlargement of the European Union (EU) in 2004. This meant that the 8 Accession countries could come to the UK without visa's to work. Most European countries imposed a ban on these workers entering there job market without visas, but the UK saw this opportunity for labour migration and welcomed it with open arms.

The result was over 250,000 Polish workers coming to the UK over a two year period. This new, cheap, hard working labour is now propping up certain industries such as construction. The Anti-immigrant UK Independence Party leader hired Polish builders to work on his country mansion, the hypocrisy of some people beggars believe!! But he must confirm what a recent Joseph Rowntree Foundation research concluded which was that the study reveals that 75% of employers felt that European enlargement had been good for business and that employers valued highly qualified migrant workers for low-skilled and low-waged work. They also preferred benefiting from what they see as the work ethic and reliability of migrant workers to employing reluctant UK nationals who some described as lazy.

But this low cost labour is means that wages are kept low nationally for the host population that are looking for employment. Those EU Nationals that are entitled to state benefits receive top-ups to their income via Working Tax Credits and other benefits.
